Sunday thoughts in Autumn

AUTUMN IN ENGLAND

We are well into Autumn now and in England that means the changing colours of nature. People around the world have commented on today’s photograph and it’s not that special. Is it? It’s just trees and leaves, but it does represent nature’s ability to change. I think we can probably learn a lot from trees.

Colours

We talk about colourful characters don’t we? They are people who stand out more, just like the yellowing leaves in my photo. I suppose we can change our colours and become more responsible as we grow older. I belong to the baby boom generation and so I’ve had a few years to learn how to get on with my fellow humans. I think I’m fairly typically English, but not a snob. I do believe in behaving in a rational and helpful way. I don’t like the greed driven, competition at any price mentality, that seems to be dominant in the country at the moment. We can compete and see who comes first or we can all take collective action and work together to make each others lives better. Friendly competition between groups is all well and good, but aggressive competition can be very destructive; for both sides.

Invest for tomorrow

It has been shown that computer games where people invest a lot of time and effort in them, are not only popular, but addictive. People often invest a lot of time and effort into making their homes or gardens look nice. Have you noticed how they often get quite obsessed with them? We do like to invest in things, it gives us more security. Investing in Britain’s commerce and industry isn’t that easy though. The stock market is a mystery to most people. They leave it to the banks, trust funds and pension funds to invest for them. The banks haven’t been doing so well though. Have they? The recent Royal Mail Share offer showed that people have a desire to invest that isn’t being fulfilled. This is a problem that needs to be addressed by government, rather than sending Osborne and Johnson off to China with their investment begging bowls.

Gas and electricity

Yes, the wholesale price of gas has gone up again or so they say. That is another industry that needs investment. We not only use gas for heating and cooking, many power stations run on gas too. We really need to replace those with an alternative. Properly run nuclear power can be less environmentally damaging than other ways of producing electricity. After the nuclear carnage of world war two, people are obviously wary of it, but it can be low risk. All science and technology has risks, so do the forces of nature. Science helps us control and live with nature and shouldn’t be seen as the enemy. We should see nature as a friend too and try to protect it, but we do use it to survive. Using nature to survive is one thing; abusing nature threatens our survival. We all want science to make serious diseases a thing of the past. We all want renewable energy. It does come at a price though. Which price are you willing to pay? If you had to choose between destroying the English Countryside or having no overseas holidays. Which would you choose? Some people are choosing the latter…

The great storm of 2013

Yes, we have a storm predicted. It’s mainly going to hit the south west of England with heavy rain and hurricane force winds with gust up to 80 mph. It is more serious when it hits the south of England, there are lots of strivers down there. If it was just hitting Scotland and the north it would be fine, we can cope. It’s getting a bit breezy here in the Midlands. The weather forecasters are saying it could blow trees down. It’s blowing the apples off my trees already. They were too high to pick anyway…

Smart Phones

Yes, I’m into the 21st century now, with a smart phone. I’m getting the hang of it, so my Twitter followers can look forward to more Tweets. I often wondered why young people stare at those screens constantly. They even walk along looking at the screen. I know why now, it takes months of messing around to learn how to use one. I’m not doing too badly, I’ve connected it to my wi-fi, set up Twitter, made a call and it seems to have switched from BST to GMT all by itself. The hardest part was fitting the sim into it.

Comments

There is a comment box, if you would like to share your thoughts with the world. What are your experiences with smart phones?  If you have a smart phone, you can follow me on Twitter. I’ll do my best to Tweet some funnies….
